today was a nice balmy 95 F in the Mojave Desert...and my mirrors were on, too! Yikes!

I'm sure they were on, because they were HOTTER than my black Tridon cell which had been sitting out in the Mojave Desert sun all day. Also, when I stopped for coffee after work, the mirrors cooled down while I was inside, and were HOT again after about 5 minutes driving.

weird...

I don't like the idea that "automatic" mirrors are on all the time: I will be calling my Mercedes service rep soon for a discussion about this issue.

I asked my dealer to pass the info on to smartUSA. It seems to me this can't reasonably be the way they designed them, and it doesn't match the description in the manual. It wouldn't surprise me if it becomes a service bulletin repair for everyone, or possibly even a safety recall. Having those on all the time in the Mojave desert doesn't seem like a good idea.

If you are really worried about them being on all the time, just unplug them. The mirror glass pops out really easy by putting something behind it and pry/pop it loose. Then unplug the wires. Pop the mirror back in and sleep well... no more worries. I replaced my mirror with the euro-convex (no blind spot) one I picked up in Germany. Took less than 2 min.

Another smart forum had a post saying the sensor is set to activate at 20°C (68°F)

But if it's above 68*, it should not be on. Some thing is either wrong in the programing, or there is no sensor hooked up!! Could be a production foul up. Trust me, very few would check it. Look how long it took us to find out!! really hope there is a fix, or I will just remove the wire that feeds the heating element. As mentioned above.

I'm sure this is a lost in conversion thing... converting Celsius in Fahrenheit... Europeans (like me) have big problems with that. Even after more than 25 years in the States I'm still trying to convert to understand what is 68 F or 75F etc...

It's one of those things.

I'm sure that they put the sensors on a wrong temp just because of that. Wanting to get them on at 2 C and not at 20 C.... or something like that
I'll check if I can get a European OM online and see at what temp they are on in Europe. Let you know.

And by the way I'll check also on my car to see if I have also the problem.
