I was assured by the "technical" person at my local smart dealership that she would contact me yesterday with what she finds out. Instead, I got an e-mail from the sales rep stating, "we will need to take a look at them to get them taken care of. "
I really don't want to drive all the way to the dealership, so I responded back to the sales rep stating that our preference would be to have the sensors mailed to us. My husband and son are very proficient with repairing cars. My son is an engineer and works with software/hardware that is installed into airplanes. I truly feel that they can replace two sensors that do not work correctly.
I received no response. So, I have now left a message directly with the "technical" person asking once again that this issue be researched by them (I bet at least one of the smart cars they use for demos has this problem). So now I wait still.
I replaced my USA mirrors with euro versions on my Audi. What an improvement. Would like to do so on the smart as well. Would you have the part numbers?
considering i have not seen a single report of the mirrors not being on all the time, i suspect it is not the sensors but something else, perhaps a mis-programming of the ECU or something.

I agree, and suspect every single car has the issue.
actually, it's not the mirrors at all, the A/C is so super-efficient, it is actually cooling the earth's atmosphere, which makes it *seem* like the mirrors are hot - when they're really just ambient temp, it's the earth that is cooler.
I just started my cabrio and after about three minutes of idleing, the mirrors were the warmest thing on the body of the car, warm but not really hot, yet....this is after being in a garage all day and a current amb. temp of 72 degrees.
My build date was 4/08 if that might help zero in on a batch of faulty sensors.
