How much oil?

For those that have done their own oil changes... How much oil did you put in to get a full reading on the dipstick?
I put in 3.3 litres/3.5 quarts and it shows a drop below full on the stick after letting the car sit for an hour.

Also FYI, my oil was black after 5000 miles. 10000 mile changes are great for the enviroment but not for my smart.

You put in the correct amount.

The colour of the oil does not indicate that it needs to be changed. The oil turns dark due to several factors that have nothing to do with it retaining viscosity, continued viablility of the additives, it's lubricity, cooling ability, etc. Oil turns dark due to chemical changes, combustion products by-passing rings, some oxidation, and very little due to ingestion of dirt particles. If the air and oil filters are doing their job you need not worry about the oil changing colour. The only way to tell if oil is still servicable is to have it analyzed. The oil change intervals recommended are conservative, unless you only take short trips, idle the engine frequently in stop and go driving, drive in exceptionally cold or hot temperatures.

Oil changes every 5000 miles over 100000 miles, 20 changes at $40, $800.
Change out engine due to lack of maintenence, $5000.
The point is obvious............ and priceless

my odo is at 6500 and my oil is still a nice rich brown color... and I drive rather heavy at times. Dunno why yours is black. odd. I'll keep watching mine, but it looks like 10k will not be a problem, and with the right oil and regular filter changes, I may be able to get 15-20k between changes.

Oil changes every 10,000 miles (as directed by the manufacturer) over 100,000 miles: $400. Engine lasting 250,000 miles either way: priceless

Guys thanks for your input but I think we are straying off topic... I'm curious about the oil level on the stick.

As far as when and why to change your oil at what mileage goes... I'm not going there.

I'm old school and I like clean oil. Do what works for you.

My socks would probably last 3 weeks without changing them too... but I'm not doing that either

Any thread with the word OIL in it is destined to go off topic. It's the nature of the beasts.

Garage
3.5 US quarts (just in case there's some other kind of quart) with a new OEM filter brought me just below the "full" mark on the dipstick.

It doesn't appear to me that there's any straying off topic - you asked how much oil and that was answered - you commented on oil being black and that was responded to.
As to where the level should show on the "stick" - it should be roughly half way between the low and high points on the stick. Overfilling is worse than having the level a little low. The safest point to strive for on the dipstick is in the midrange. If you changed filter and oil at the same time and you installed 3.3 litres then you have exactly what the manufacturer specifies for oil quantity.

By the way, changing at 10,000 miles instead of 5000 miles is not lack of maintenance unless the engine is exposed to severe service. The old way of thinking about engine oils and when to change needs itself to undergo a change. Oils and engines are not the same as they were not too long ago. Also, as I mentioned, the colour of the oil has nothing to do with whether it should be changed or not.

If you have reservations about these simple statements, then perhps the following study might shed a little light on the subject.
Synthetic Oil Life Study

You might also want to frequent the following website that tends to be populated by some tribologists, knowledgable enthusiasts, seriously interested DIY'ers, and those questing for more information.

Be-aware that although there is some valuable and reliable information on the internet, for the most part the internet is the source of disinformation instead. The two sources mentioned are widely known as being reliable.

Knowledge is priceless, ignorance is worthless.
