Important - Engine Misfiring - Others are reporting problem

I reported a problem about the engine missing then running normal in another thread, here . . . Engine service light went on then off

The fault codes were PO300, PO303 at 250 miles. Smart USA recommended changing the spark plugs and regapping to 1.0mm, which was done.

The same problem has happened at 330 miles. The Smart Tech says that Smart USA will now recommend replacing the injectors. He also said this is happening to other Smarts, specifically to some "Test" Smarts in Michigan. The injectors were replaced on the Michigan Smarts and they have run OK for hundreds of miles since the replacement.

The tech also thinks that warmer climates (California) and rushed testing may be part of the problem.

I'll report back with the results.

Mine came on today for the first time. Car really isn't running rough or anything, about 2300 miles on it. It was a pretty hot day, running the AC and doing about 65. Light is still on, I had planned to head to the dealer this week anyway for some other items.

I would suspect bad fuel long before failed plugs or injectors...IMO

3000 miles and only motor fault to date is the CEL for secondary air injector failure

Any one find the fuel filter yet?..... evil grin

Yesterday afternoon I noticed a bit of engine missing in my smart. It lasted about 2 or 3 minutes, no CEL, no codes thrown. The car had been sitting in the sun (although it was only about 70 degrees) for about 15 minutes after having been driven for a relatively short dash to the store. I felt to me like a fuel line vapor lock that used to be fairly common in older cars.

Update 7-15-08: Got a call from the mechanic. Something about swapping the coils between cylinders 2 and 3 and they will be replacing all the injectors tomorrow. I'm not familiar with this engine yet, so I don't know why they would swap coils. Pickup on 7-16-08.

Mine had 300 miles on the clock when it went back to the dealer with this problem. I am picking it back up in an hour or so... this dealer is claiming that the fuel in the fuel rail had boiled and turned to vapor (essentially like a vapor lock in an old carburated engine) and it is running fine now. Seems pretty unlikely to me... even if it could happen, the fuel system should be able to regulate the pressure in the fuel rail and overcome such a problem if it were to occur. Did this tech you are speaking with make reference to a service bulletin that I can point this guy to?
