Just drove my car Home (Re: ignition key)

Hello to all,

I just bought my SMART from a local MB dealer. It has 1600 miles on it and I am charged about it. A concern that I have right from the start is that the dealer only had one key for the car. Can I have a spare key cut somewhere or does the key have a chip in it requiring me to go to a dealer for an extra?

I'll see your dealer and raise you a large wallet.

Yep, you have to get a spare AND have the pair programmed at the dealer. I've read it's about 300 bucks, but... you probably got a decent discount on the car, so just consider it part of the sale price and you won't need nearly as much therapy.

Enjoy your new smart and welcome to the forum!

Hope the key is not too much of a problem.

To be safe, I'd have them wipe the memory of ALL keys and reprogram in the one you have and the new set. Just in case that other key is out there somewhere.

I lost one of my keys yesterday (primarily because you can't fit it on a keyring without a crow bar!). The dealer wants $200 for another one?!

Anywhere else cheaper?

NO where else to go

You HAVE to go to the dealer for a new one

You have to take ALL your keys when you take the car in as they all have to be "programmed" together; my dealer say $150 each

Good luck

It's not the key/fob that is so expensive, it's the subscription to the Internet access to the site that allows legitimate programming of the fob that requires a costly investment.
If you can find a friendly soul that has access to the MB Star site (most likely a Dealer)... and who has the means to match and legitimize your key/fob, you're in luck!

There's no excuse for them not to provide 2 keys on a car so new, no matter what the deal. These cars are inexpensive, but the parts are priced like Mercedes parts.
