also, throw out your mileage from your very first tankful. The odds that the dealer truly topped off your tank are low, so your numbers will be off. Having said that, my first reading was 35 mpg, second was 41 mpg in rural driving. We're currently steady at 45mpg (at 3k miles). If you don't get into the 30's on your next tank, keep an eye out for other problems (read the Lemon Law thread).

As for fuel economy, in the Uk a lot of people are grumbling about it. We found with ours that the first 1000 miles or so werent great, but now we get good figures depending on how we drive it. My partner andy uses it at the moment cause he's a community nurse and we worked out his last tank for 52mpg UK (43 US), but we have had 56 (46.6) out of it

The issue was finally resolved it was a SAM?? unit I think. They replaced it now it works fine. The turn signal was blinking twice as fast in the rear (and dashboard) and not at all in the front. All is well now.

Thanks

The SAM unit has most of the relays and computer logic to control things in the car... apparently the Smart is far more computer controlled than other cars, and functions that are often just a switch are still routed through the SAM. As a software engineer, I'd love to hack into that thing and see what can be traced or interfaced.

Glad you're on the road again.

But IMnsHO, it was probably either a bad bulb or dodgy socket connection. A proper-trained technician could have fixed this in under ten minutes with pennies worth of parts or no parts at all.

if that is true then they really are idiots (I tried the bulb 1st - wasn't that) at one point they took my whole car apart looking for a short.
