Key Fob

Has anyone had problems with their key fob? 4 months old and stopped working..not dropped, near water or anything else I can think of. I know how to change the battery (thanks to Evilution) and have not changed it yet.

Thank goodness I was at home where the spare was at.

Any issues out there on this yet?

One member had the key in his pocket and a colleague told him that his smart kept beeping: something was actually pressing on the key/fob buttons at every step, triggering the car (through walls, though not far) to re-lock each and every time. Obviously, that would have drained the battery quickly...
Since that post, I make sure that the fob isn't in a position to be pressed-on accidently.

In "normal" use, a key should last 1-2 years before a battery change is needed.

Yep, my key does the same thing I found when I was washing it with key in pocket I kept setting it off. Reposition the key and continue. Hope that's all the problem you had. My New Beetle key was about $180 to replace.

Key Fob Replacement & Other issues

Well 8k miles (1st one in MA) and no problems until about a week ago. I left my key in the ignition for a week (in my garage) while I was away and when I came back, the battery was dead. There were no accessories or lights on... it seems the key drew enough over the week to kill the battery.

Also I lost my second key fob and just ordered a replacement for $163! $46 for the metal part of the key and $107 for the "radio" fob part + taxes!

I ordered the key when I brought it in for a sticky shifter - difficulty getting it in and out of Park. That has been the first problem of any kind I have had... not even a rattle or squeak!

thanks for the replies. So far, it lives on my counter at the front door and is only in my pocktbook while I am at work. I'll know if it is the battery this weekend.

It the key part of the warranty?

No reason it shouldn't! Unless you damage the key (i.e. run over) or loose it. Then, replacement is a $300+ proposition, it requires new programming "live" from Smartville/Europôle.
