Key symbol on dashboard instead of "P"

I did the key mod as described on eviloution's site and removed the key from the "lollypop" now I occasionally find that the car will not start. The dash lights come on, the radio comes on and I get a key symbol where I usually see the P for park, but the starter will not engage.

I have found that if I turn the key to the on position and wait for the car to run it's diagnostic program, the P appears and it starts as normal. It's curious how it stsrted to happen only after I modified the key.

BTW, the key mod really helps when you have a few keys on your chain, it now fits into a pocket much better than before.

Anyone else have this experience?

If you unlock the car, open the door and don't start the car within 5 minutes, the immobilizer (key symbol) operates. when this happens, turn off the ignition and press the unlock button on the fob, You now have 5 more minutes to start the car before the immobillizer kicks in again.

At the Rose Bowl Drive-up I'll show you a (what I think) neat mod associated with your key mod. You are already halfway there.

I was looking into doing this mod. As an experiment, I removed the electronics from one key and used that to start the car with the second key on the same keyring. I could never get it to work, I always got the "key" symbol.

Is this for an 2006 450? My 2008 451 doesn't work this way.

There's no time limit with the 451. The car can be unlocked for hours and you can start it without hitting any buttons on the fob. The immoblizer kicks in when it doesn't sense the RFID chip in the key. If the electronics are just slightly out of place, the RFID chip can't be seen and the immobilizer is activated (key symbol instead of P).

I was hoping to separate the key from the fob so that I could leave the key in the ignition and keep the fob in my pocket but, with the fob in my pocket the RFID chip isn't detected and the car won't start.

Maybe with the fob and key seperated, the fob hangs lower or is blocked by the other keys on the ring. That could explain the problem. I wonder where the sensor is located?
