My preference is the Purolator PureONE PL14612, and I presently have one in use. It has a synthetic fleece medium, and its bypass valve spring rate is similar to the OEM filter (17psi vs. 18psi). It has a silicone rubber anti-drainback valve, said to be better than the common nitrile rubber valve, though the smart's somewhat vertical filter mounting makes that less important. It does demonstrate that top components go into the filter. The filter is the longest of those specified by their respective manufacturers for the smart, but there still is 1/16" greater ground clearance than the bottom of the oil sump drain plug casting. The longer length argues for more filter capacity before blocking compared to the smaller ones.
Subjectively, I am most confident in this filter as in early June 2008 I corresponded with Purolator concerning a PureONE equivalent to the Mitsu 1230A040 (OEM smart). The inquiry was forwarded to their product engineers at Fayetteville, NC. They subsequently "benchmarked" the Mitsu/smart, with a bit of email between myself and the senior product engineer, including forwarding photos provided by "Evilution" (with Kane's permission) of the smart engine and its installed surroundings. Ultimately, Robert Bosch/Purolator Filters NA specified the "better" Premium Plus L14612 and the "best" PureONE PL14612 filters for the smart 999cc.
Like the Mobil M1-108, the PL14612 is not very expensive, readily available, and considerably less than the OEM Mitsu/smart.
