Found this on www.lubrication.net:

Shell Helix Ultra AB 5W-40

Fully Synthetic Shell Helix Ultra represents the ultimate performance achievable for today's passenger car engines. Developed by Shell using a combination of additive components and synthetic base fluids, the performance of Shell Helix Ultra far exceeds all current industry and motor manufacturer specifications. It meets all motor manufacturers technical requirements and is officially approved by Peugeot-Citroen, Rover Group, VW/Audi, BMW (Longlife), Mercedes-Benz (229.3[and 229.5]), Porsche and Ferrari service-fill approval.

M-B/Mit?

Why would we be working with M-B recommendations when the engine is a Mitsubishi? At least the 451s.'

fish, my take on it is M-B is the car maker; Mitsu supplies the engine but M-B sets all the service requirements, including oil. Could be totally wrong, of course.

I personally would 100% recommend AMSOIL products. The FIRST In Synthetics since 1972...
They have everything from Oil, Tranny fluid, brake fluids, Leather and Vinyl cleaner, etc etc etc
No I am not a dealer of AMSOIL, But I believe in it 100% and so does all of our family and friends...

Owners manual?

How about we give this a rest until somebody with a new car confirms what the owners manual calls for (although I think our Canadian members have done this) and then we'll all know what the "book" calls for.

Fred, many posts back, did you recommend a break-in with standard oil then switch to the synth after 1000 mi or so? I wanna get this down.

Are we being fleeced?

"229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils."

And just what is a fleece oil filter? Something tells me Fram, etc. will not have an equivalent in stock anytime soon. Now I understand the $20 retail price - ouch!

NOTE: found this on mysimon.com:

2002 Mercedes - Benz C32 AMG fleece media oil filter - 3.2 V6
Mann HU 718/5 x fleece media extended service interval oil filter for 2002 Mercedes - Benz C32 AMG with 3.2 V6 engine $14.99

So, the M-B oil spec requires this filter, but it's a Mitsubishi engine - what filter does Mitsu require? It's a puzzlement.

A little poking around produced the info that the Mobil 1 brand oil filter has a high-efficiency "synthetic" filtering medium (opposed to the common pleated paper), and that may be the same as the "golden fleece" spoken of. No idea how much they cost.

Haven't heard from new owners with owners manuals in hand. I still wonder if the engine recommendations should come from M-B or from Mitsubishi (or Mitsubishi via Smart GmbH)?

Add: Purolators with Microfil III medium (not all have it).
