Got the indicator to reset on the second attempt by doing the following:
• Switch on the ignition to position 1.
• Select maintenance indicator within 4 sec by double tapping the left instrument cluster button.
• Switch of the ignition to position 0 (off) within 10 sec.
• Push and hold in the instrument cluster button and switch ignition on (start the car).
• Hold the instrument cluster button for another 10sec.
• In that time, the spanner symbol on the LCD will flash and eventually reset.

Had to do it myself as the dealer's service department refused to after only performing an oil change!

That way also worked for me, but its all in the timing. Keep trying!

What else is involved in the 10k service that they insisted on doing? The general checkup shouldn't take too much labor, should it?

Dealer charged $110 for an oil change (4 quarts / synthetic) and wanted $260 for the 10K service which includes an oil change, cabin air filter replacement and checking the fluids...

Guess that's what happens when you maintain a smart at a Mercedes service department.

Thanks. I'll try that tomorrow. The only thing I did not do is start the car after turning the ignition OFF.

No, because there is no code to clear. My wrench (spanner) is showing but didn't get any codes at all.

Also tried the two approved methods to no avail. Guess it really is all in the timing. Of course, it hasn't been nine days yet like Mr. DAVE61353, either.

Took me a good 10 tries but it finally worked. I believe it's succesful once you reset the indicator and the -# turns to 10,000 miles indicating that you wont have to deal with that for another 10,000 miles.

I need to try the steps again. I went to the dealer on Monday and no one there knew how to do it! Stupid manual is wrong. Why does it have to be sooo difficult?!?
