Max speed per gear in manual mode?

In manual mode, at what speed will the computer take over and shift into the next gear?

Thanks Wizco.

Gear 1 Max speed: ? MPH
Gear 2 Max speed: 60 - 65 MPH
Gear 3 Max speed: 70's MPH
Gear 4 Max speed: Not enough HP to reach.
Gear 5 Max speed: Not enough HP to reach.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Depends on throttle position , loading and the number of days prior to the autumnal equinox .....

the computer shifts depending upon throttle. light throttle will result in very quick upshifts... heavy throttle will wind out each gear before upshifting. 5K rpms would not be uncommon in spirited driving. 3-3.5K is a more common shiftpoint with moderate driving (not hypermiling)

Thanks for responding.

When your driving in manual mode there has to be a max speed for each gear before the computer automatically throws is up right?
E.G.
1st max speed is 25
2nd max speed is whatever
etc.. etc..

It cant be completely dependent either on the autumanual equinox or throttle position but mainly on the RPM before it redlines right? Correct me if im wrong.

there is a rev-limiter, correct. revs don't closely relate to ground speed tho as ground speed is affected by many other factors as well.

when driving in manual mode, you're deciding where the shift points are - the computer will suggest the shiftpoint of optimum economy with an upward pointing or downward pointing arrow. it is just a suggestion however. the engine is capable of revving much higher than that. redline is 6-7K rpms. the power band is between 3k and 4k in my experience, purely by the seat dyno. i don't have any graphs to illustrate it or anything.

what i'm saying is, max speed is variable - two heavy adults uphill in a headwind with the A'/C on will get to redline quicker and have a different ground speed in gear than downhill, with a light passenger and a strong tailwind.

There isn't a rev limiter in the smart like one normally has a rev limiter. On a normal manual car when you hit redline, the engine will pulse as the fuel cuts in and out until you shift to the next gear.

The smart even in manual will simply shift to the next gear. It shifts at the same rpms, (in manual) regardless of load or throttle position.

I haven't paid attention to the mph on the 1-2 shift, but 2-3 hits around 60-65 mph. Third will take you into the 70's. You cannot make the car go fast enough to force a shift to fourth in manual. You run out horsepower before you run out of revs.

right. is the original question better stated: "in manual mode, at what speed will the computer take over and shift into the next gear?"

i didn't get that in the first post, but wizco's reply cleared that up for me.

Mine shifts at 6500rpm when in manual and standing on the throttle until it shifts by itself.
I got mine to shift to 4th in manual, again, at 6500rpm in 3rd it goes to 4th. I reach 90mph in 4th before 6500 so it will stay there unless I shift manual into 5th.

Thanks Wiz and Mendo.... This is some really good info. I don't have a tach yet and was worried when in forth on the freeway (changing lanes at 65-70 mph) about redlining.

I refuse to use automode
Not gonna worry anymore.
