My new 2008 Passion is just being broken in now. It does have the tach but during break-in I don't want to push it too hard. Do I understand that there is no rev limiter such as fuel or ignition cutoff but that the computer will upshift at a specific rpm of it's own accord despite the driver wanting to keep it in a lower gear?
If that is indeed the situation it then that is actually a different method of rev-limiting.

As to what speed you should shift at - that is a function of engine revs, not road speed - but naturally gearing would determine the roadspeed at any given engine rpm. If you don't have a tach, and the computer will force a shift to protect the engine, then why be concerned about it at all?
The only thing to be very careful about is to avoid downshifting into a gear that would overrev the engine - I presume that the computer would allow a driver to do that.

It's not that there's not enough HP... it's the speed governor that keeps you from going faster than 90mph.

I know that our Cabrio will easily go to the engine cut-off speed, which on ours is just over 90 MPH indicated in 5th gear. No problem having enough power to get there.

The ECU should keep the engine from over-revving in any case. If you choose a downshift and the computer determines that the speed is too great to do the downshift without exceeding the programmed limit, then it will delay the shift? I've been told that, but not tried it myself cuz I'm a bit of a sissy...

These little cars actually shift and drive very nicely in a " spirited " way. I like the way the car drives far better in " the twisties " than in the city to tell the truth. I've run up on the ESP limits a couple times and it feels a bit strange but nothing all that goofy. The car has a bit of understeer which is to be expected on standard tires up front, but instead of transitioning to " terminal oversteer " like a " proper " rear engine car.... the ESP " saves " the day for me. How thoughtful.

I'd actually like to disengage that ESP and let it all hang out maybe now and then and spin like a top, the way a " proper " car ought. I guess I'm too old for that sort of thing these days and somehow the Cabrio has sensed it. How " smart " is THAT ?
:-))

Not gonna worry anymore.

if you use manual and stand on it the system will not let you overrev above 6500. In my experience, this driving style SUCKS THE FUEL RIGHT DOWN!!!!!. just so you know,
