Milage increase??

This will sound insane but here goes....

Normally I drive right around 55-65 (speed limit) when going to and from work daily (about 43 miles each way) averaging aprox 41 MPG which is darn good. The colder weather has seen it drop slightly which is to be expected. Last week we had an emergency situation that required me to return home quickly. Yes, the Smart will do 90 MPH and thats about it. it handles great. I don't suggest it as the car does have a distinct look to it and is easy for the local law enforcement to pick out of a crowd.

BUT... On that tank, I got 52mpg. Not sure if it was a fluke but I re-checked it 3 times. I am wondering if this crazy lil car just likes to be driven hard or ??

I fill at the same pump and using the same method every time. Milage has been pretty consistant and has not been above 43 MPG so far (almost 7,000 miles) maybe it finally got broke in??

90 mile hour tail wind, the engine was off. Divide how many mile driven, by gallons filled. Did you reset the trip odometer???

You're not alone... The best mileage I ever got was a trip from Orlando to Tampa all interstate and my average speed was 80-85... 52mpg.

MPG's seem to be all over the place... I've seen everything from low 30's to upper 40's in my smart with the one 52.

The engine's most efficient in 5th gear with low RPMs. About 50-55MPH is peak. I doubt your next tank will show 50MPG if you drove for a full tank at 90MPH. More likely a pump shut off early - very likely if you filled up a half tank in a hurry. An early pump shutoff can give you one less full gallon, for about a 15% MPG increase on a full tank or 30% on a half tank. Sorry, don't get those hopes too high. MPGs are best measured over a long time with the same pump, facing the same direction, yadda yadda. With this car it's almost impossible to measure accurately. And a single passenger adds 10% cargo load which will reduce MPGs slightly, so will wind, etc.

I've gotten 27 and 55 in succession for an average of 41, interstate at 70MPH. That's about what the car's rated for the conditions. I use feedback from my Scangauge to increase my highway MPGs to 45 average using pseudo pulse and glide techniques (speed limit 65, I approach a hill at 70 and crest it at 55-60). The car's much more fun to drive when I don't worry about saving that dollar of gas per tank.

The tank AFTER your great tank will help you tell the truth. I just turned over 20k miles this afternoon!!! It all comes out in the wash - all the tanks averaged together over the lifetime of the car tells the truth and helps fix the early pump shutoffs, and other things of that nature.

I've found that sometimes when I go a bit faster I keep up with traffic better and that results in me inadvertently drafting thus increasing my gas mileage.

Trip odometer was reset, I record milage and gallons at each fill. They have been fairly consistant except for a few sub-zero temps when milage dropped into the 30's but I don't think that was out of line. Usually if the tank isn't filled all the way, it shows on the gauge. I have seen the full tank/ not full gauge issue and figured out I was filling the tank too fast causing foaming in the tank. With close to 7,000 miles, just wondering if I hit that magic break in mark..

P.S. no tail wind, weaving through traffic like a madman, probably upset a few people. If you saw me... Sorry...

Next time drive 554 miles, put in 8.37 gallons, which should be very easy at your stated mileage, and then I'll believe it. Right now, sorry, I don't.
