Mobil 1

Took an unnecessary ride over to the local auto parts store today to check out the 0-40 Mobil 1 price, among other things. MAN HAS THE PRICE OF THAT STUFF EVER GONE UP!!! $6.88/qt!! I have not been a user of synthetic oil ever but I think I will continue to use it in the smart engine since it came with it. I also think that I will modify my age old practice of dino oil changing every 3,000 miles. (ALWAYS used Castrol oil and AC or Purolator filters except for the S-2000 in which the OEM filter was used and still is)
I will probably only put on 10K miles a year so changing a good quality synthetic once a year would not be unacceptable, I guess. I do plan to change the oil after the first 500 miles, though, for reasons previously stated here on the forum by me and others....get out the build and initial wear debri, basically.
So for about $47 a year in oil and an OEM filter...I think I can handle that alright. ($17 filter, $30 for 4 qts of oil)
I hope breaking this time honored tradition doesn't come back to bite me....
I think I will monitor the oil color and odor and I may modify my modified oil changing agenda if I notice anything alarming. Jez, how we get *dyed-in-the-wool* as we've aged! LOL
(and I justknow Fred is going to bust on me with this one, too!!!) HEHEHE

John

Can't say what it is going for now, but I've seen Mobil 1 going for a good price at Costco at some point - might want to check it out.

Unless you live in a very cold area like Canada I wouldn't suggest 0W-40 oil.
0W oil is designed for excellent cold starting, in normal climates it takes a while for the oil to perform properly meaning you are getting excessive wear.

I always recommend 10W-40 oil.

Fully sythetic oil doesn't need mid-service changing like mineral oils do.
Mineral oil breaks down but fully synth doesn't, the only reason fully synthetic oil needs changing at all is because the additives expire.
You can even buy oil that lasts 25,000 or 30,000 miles without the need for changing.

I have run mobil 1 for many years and change it every 10k. 130k on expedition and 150 on last blazer. I love it, but I only use K&N filters, any word on filters other than OEM.

mobil 1 0w40 is what the car is required to take. You have to Follow MB's rule 229.5 (search its on the net and i have posted it in the smart car america). there are other weights on the list but nothing over 5w30

Here's all I know (not much!) about Mobil 1: have run it in 3 successive C5 Corvettes, using GM recommended 5W-30 weight. GM change interval is now up to 15K miles or when the computer decides you should change. Absolutely no problems here in chilly Ohio. Use the same spec in our WRX wagon which sits outdoors all through the winter. Both cars are low mileage per year so they get an annual oil change. Don't know why smart recommends 0W-30 Mobil 1; maybe one of the techs can find out. Whatever the reason, probably best to stick with what they recommend until we get more info.

My guess the 0W-xx "requirement" is out of excess caution to include the bubbas in International Falls, MN and the assumption that Americans are basically dumb and don't know their range of outside temperatures. Anyway, the M-B 229.5 spec also cites the use of a “fleece” oil filter. So far, the only two brands of U.S. aftermarket fleece filters that I can identify are the “Mobil 1 Extended Performance” and the “Purolator PureONE” filters.
