FAIRFAX, Va.**(BUSINESS WIRE2)**ExxonMobil today announced that Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil, has been selected by smart USA Distributor LLC (“smart USA”), a subsidiary of Penske Automotive Group, Inc., as the recommended service-fill oil for maintenance in the smart fortwo.

It's a good technological match.”

The smart fortwo is manufactured by Mercedes-Benz Cars and is a Daimler brand. “We are proud of our association with Mobil 1 and pleased to extend our affiliation with the brand into the smart fortwo,” said Roger Penske, Chairman of Penske Automotive Group. “Mobil 1 Technology keeps Penske Racing’s cars running on the track and will now do the same for the smart fortwo vehicles on the American road.”

So that was the reason for the non-disclosure in the owner's manual. smart was working out a marketing arrangement with Mobil, "additionally, a “smart approves Mobil 1” sticker will be placed in the engine compartment to remind owners." I wonder how much Mobil paid for that one?

No surprise really. Mobil 1 has been a Penske sponsor for years.

Hmmm... smart center Seattle told me they use Mobil 1 0W-40.

I wish Mobil 1 made an oil filter for our smarts. I asked them earlier and they didn't. Maybe now they will (?).

There is no right or wrong Mobil 1 oil, it depends on the climate of where you live. 0W oil is designed to help protect your car during cold starts at -40.

If you put 0W in your car and you don't get -40 temperatures then you will get little protection until the engine warms up.

5W-40 or 10W-40 are usually a good place to start.

Viscosity

The climatological data for Williamsburg, VA is: a record low of -5.5F, a record high of +104.5, and a annual mean of +59.3F. According to the Engine Oil Viscosity table that was eliminated from the US Operators Instructions, even 10W-xx would be good for me.

I have a Mobil 1 oil filter, M1-108 which is made for my smart...at least I hope so! I guess I'll know for sure when I put it on. Got it at an Advanced Auto Parts store here in Vero Beach FL. I also have the Mobil 1 0w-40 which is designated "European Car Formula" and is what I was told comes in the smart and is recommended for the smart. While in Auburn AL recently I came across a clearance table of car stuff, and there were 10 quarts of the Mobil 1 0w-40, European Car Formula for $5 each. I bought all 10 quarts. I think I'm set for quite a while. By the way, I just picked up my smart on Monday, April 7. I had put my $99 down on April 7 last year. Long wait, but worth it. What a little hoot. My wife said we should have bought 2, she also likes it so much....which was really a surprise to me. Drive smart! Jack, Vero Beach FL
