Actually, it has nothing to do with smart itself or Penske. Mobil 1 has been a chief sponsor of McLaren-Mercedes F1 since MB started supplying engines. For about 10 years their road cars have had the stickers. When you consider that Mobil also supports the MB factory DTM cars, they're paying a couple of hundred million dollars a year (maybe more).
BMW used to recommend Mobil as well. But when they got into F1, Castrol was a sponsor of Frank Williams. So Castrol synthetic started going into the road cars. They don't have stickers-the plastic engine covers have "BMW (or Mini) recommends Castrol" molded right into them.
