MPG

Hi guys,

Just a quick question for you. In the UK, a lot of 451 owners are complaining about their mpg. Using our metric system, he best i have got from our car is 56mpg, which i am more than happy with. Average is probably closer to 48 in town work. Lots of others are getting a lot less than that, some struggling to get 40!

What are you guys getting out of your car?

We get 28 to 29 mpg on our two cabrios, but these are US gallons and I bet we use the air conditioning more than you do in Scotland.

Smart #1 (Blue Cabrio) gets 40-42 mpg.
Smart #2 (Yellow Cabrio) gets 44 mpg.
Therefore, buy yellow for better mpg!

I am getting 48 MPG (US gallons) in mixed suburban driving - when I run without the AC on. On some days if the traffic lights are in my favor I can get 50 MPG. With the AC on it drops to the low 40 MPG range. If I drive agressively with the AC on the mileage going down to about 38 MPG. I use a calibrated Scanguage for these measurements. I find the Scanguage very helpful in getting the best mileage possible.

1866 miles on 54.567 US gallons, or
3003 Km on 45.438 Imperial gallons (206.57 liters)
A/C on most of the time. Sporty in town driving.

I'm getting within the 33/41 EPA range - averaging 37 mpg - normal driving with moderate A/C
Worse mpg - 34 mpg - speeding, fast starts from stop lights, moderate A/C usage
Best mpg - 43 mpg - driving SLOWWWW or below 65 mph, no A/C

By The Numbers

I have graphed my consumption figures, recorded since delivery and now pressing 1500 miles, beginning with 29.6 MPG(US). At last look, 36.2 MPG. All of the driving has been similar: inner city/some hills (no highway); A/C with recirc; 93 octane E10 from the same pump. The graph shows an increase at every fillup. The greatest increases occured during the first 300 miles of a 500 mile period when fossil oil was used (right after delivery). After 900 miles the increases continued, but at a much smaller rate, and I suspect that the majority of "break-in" had occurred by then. I may still see some improvement. I am 22% better than delivery, and 10% better than EPA City. The car is definitely more lively. I drive stick only and my wife drives rubber-shift. I did not baby the car through the first 1000 miles, but kept the engine freely turning in the 2500-4000 RPM range, with many deliberate, brisk accelerations between the two. I actually drive a little more conservatively now than during the break-in regimen. I still don't baby it; no "hypermileing" or searching for frog hairs.

From the tanks I've figured....
I'm only averaging 27 miles per gal
But ...........
I am happy!
The past 20 years, same driving pattern
were in a 86 Cad Fleetwood Broughm
7.5 to 8.5 miles per gallon.

Makes me smile.........
