Orlando smart was great, nice new waiting room and right across from the Mall. I sat down and had a cup of coffee while Garrett did my 10,000 mile check up. I had the engine oil and filtered changed. Reset the maintenance counter in cluster.(?) Top all fluids. Replaced the activated charcoal filter for the a/c. installed premium engine treatment, inspect steering and suspension, tires and my car wash. The nicest part was that Garrett took me for a ride and showed me some tips on driving for better mpg. He thinks using the manual is better and explained it all to me.

Your service manager took you for a test/training drive after a routine service? Wow, that's going above and beyond anything I've seen at another dealer. Usually it's, "here are your keys, now pay up. And trust us, it's fine. It cranked up, right?"

Hello Jetfuel,

This is the way I explain it to my guest. smart designed the trans to have as nice of a shift feel as possible with having a manual trans and not giving you the driver a clutch. What they did is set the trans to shift at a lower RPM, now while this does make for a smooth shift the engine RPM is usally lower then it would be if you had a clutch pedal to operate.

So after the vehicle has upshifted for you the engine is working pretty hard to get the RPM and speed back up, this repeats again at the next upshift.

If you drive in manual modr you can let the vehicle get to bit higher RPM so it is not working so hard after the upshift. By making the engine work less you can actually improve your MPG from the vehicle, as well as the performance.
