Hello Jetfuel,
This is the way I explain it to my guest. smart designed the trans to have as nice of a shift feel as possible with having a manual trans and not giving you the driver a clutch. What they did is set the trans to shift at a lower RPM, now while this does make for a smooth shift the engine RPM is usally lower then it would be if you had a clutch pedal to operate.
So after the vehicle has upshifted for you the engine is working pretty hard to get the RPM and speed back up, this repeats again at the next upshift.
If you drive in manual modr you can let the vehicle get to bit higher RPM so it is not working so hard after the upshift. By making the engine work less you can actually improve your MPG from the vehicle, as well as the performance.
