I am not around my car right now, but on my other ride if you have steering column lock engage, key won't turn. Moving steering wheel while turning the key usually fixing the problem.

His other ride that he was talking about is a PT Cruiser. He knows the smarts don't have a steering lock.

after not doing anything for a week I put the key in and it turned! I really did nothing since the day of my first post and for some reason it just turned...It has me a bit worried that this may happen again when I'm on a roadtrip or across town. Anyone have anything like this happen besides me?

Have you contacted the dealership yet? If so, what was their thought?

Not unlike 'cubefx' mentioned above, I still believe it must have been connected to the position of the gearshift, but in the case of the smart, the lock interacts with the "P" position instead of the steering wheel. You may have moved the lever back to its true "P" position accidently, and now it works. Best luck...
