No oil drain plug in earlier SC's??

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MCC-S...em320210253639

Ok, what am I missing here?

Don't tell me they had to SIPHON or drop the pan to change the oil in '98-'07 engines.

My understanding is that they sucked it out of the dipstick tube with a electric pump. Too strange!

Correct; the eBay thing is a modified pan with magnetic drain plug, 450s only. There's a previous thread in the 450 section.

Even tho it seems odd, mobile oil change services exist where they suck it out thru the top.

It is very common for marine engines to be installed such that the oil pan drain plug is inaccessible and/or there is insufficient space in the engine bilge to fit a catch pan. Therefore, pulling the oil out via the dipstick tube is common practice, and the marine supply houses carry a number of different types or oil change pumps. Mine is simply a plastic jerry with a vacuum pump - once the jerry is evacuated (about 20 strokes) you push its hose down the dipstick tube to the bottom of the pan, release its pinch-clamp, and sit back and wait for the (pre-warmed) oil to come out. It is actually less of a bother than crawling around on your back with oil running down your arm.

Sounds like another way to keep you coming back to the dealer for service. For me adding an oil drain plug will be my first modification, even if I have to remove the oil pan and have a drain bung welded in. Is the oil pan metal?

One less mod.....
Thanks for the info.
