Noise when first started

When I first start the car there's what sounds like a pump or something coming from the engine area. It's a pretty high pitched noise, and then stops after about a minute or so. I only notice it when the car has been sitting for awhile, after it's warmed up I don't remember hearing it. Is this normal?

I'd just take it back to the dealer and ask them if it weren't so far away.

It is a fan that blows air into the exhaust system. it helps improve emissions on cold start. It s normal.

All our smarts do that. Check this thread: Ladies and gentlemen, start your.....FANS!? and this one New to the sounds

Post #2 on thread 23339 has the technical explanation. I was lucky that Nick from smart Center of Sacramento, explained us what that was when delivering the car. Otherwise, I would be here asking the same thing!

But it shouldn't be for a minute... It may sound longer than really is.
