Oh No!! Another oil thread. :)

Sorry to post another oil thread... but some of the info is so spread out I have been having trouble getting it all together. This is my understanding so far.....

Oil Filters:
Stock filter from dealer. (dunno part number, don't really care about it)
WIX ~ 57040
Mobil 1 ~ M1-108
AMSoil ~ EA012
EAOM103 (synthetic fleece filter (listed under motorcycle filters!))
Purolator ~ PL14612
Fram ~ PH6607 (not using Fram for a few years because they suck now.)

Oil:
There is a wide range of options here.... I plan on using Mobil 1 0w-40 for my initial change... and then AMSoil afterwards, (although not sure about the 0w-40 being motorcycle oil, may just go with a different weight like 0w-20, I am in Michigan after all.)

Transmission oil:
I believe that I can use Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75w-90, but am not positive, confirmation of this information would be great.

Okay... now for the main reason I started this thread.... I've got all the info I need (I think), and am only missing one item.
How do I change the transmission fluid? And does this really only have 2 quarts of tranny fluid?

I plan on doing the oil change this weekend with the Mobil products and don't want to screw anything up. I could probably figure it out myself by looking at it for a few minutes because I used to do minor auto repairs, and if this was a normal car I wouldn't hesitate. However, if I screw this one up... it's gonna be hard to fix and I refuse to spend hundreds at the dealer that is almost 50 miles from me for something I can accomplish myself for under $50.;)

In my email conversations with AMSoil technical, they identified the WIX 57040 as a replacement for the OEM smart/Mitsu/Tokyo Roki (at least in size). The WIX 57040 is a paper medium filter, as are the similar NAPA ??040 and Carquest ??040. They also said that it "...looks like the EaO12 would work." The AMSoil EaO is a full synthetic fleece filter. The EaOM103 is an upgraded cross for the Yamaha/Tokyo Roki motorcycle/ATV 5DM-13440-00, which is an exact clone of the OEM smart. AMSoil didn't mention the EaOM103 in their email. I am assuming that AMSoil is a customer of WIX/Dana as are NAPA and Carquest.

Purolator engineering is recommending that the Premium Plus L14612 be listed for use in the smart. I am still waiting for info back from them if the PL14612 PureOne will also be recommended. The longer 14610 may also work, but they only sent the short 14612 up to marketing so far.

Mobil 1 technical told me they will list the M1-108 once they get access to a smart and verify that there is sufficient ground clearance.

Something to consider with small profile filters: only Tokyo Roki specifically notes their success in small filter technology. TOKYO ROKI CO.LTD.,

My boss is working closely with the manufacture of that filter and they told us today that this filter should work out just fine, but they have not 'officially' tested it yet because they can't get their hands on a Smart. The identical filter made from K&N (except it's a little easier to put on and remove) is the HP-1008. Both of these filters offer a higher filtering surface area than the stock filter does, which would be a great combination with the Mobil 1 oil

Thanks for the responses guys... I just need to make sure that the oil is good for the tranny, I did find instructions here for changing the tranny fluid... and it's not different from any others I have done... was just afraid that it would be with how little room there is under the 'hood'.

Unless the smart uses a "wet" clutch you should not use motorcycle oil....

The easy thing to do is just buy the required amount from the dealer, or if you are not close, call and ask the smart service bubba what to get. The cost of the once-in-a-lifetime, transmission post-break-in deal is insignificant in the ultimate running cost of the car, even at smart prices.

We posted this in another 'oil' thread but it also applies here too so just a quick update. My boss has just informed me that he was contacted again by the company that makes the filters for Mobil 1 and K&N. He sent them many pictures at varying angles. They said, and I quote "Thank you for the pictures you supplied, they were quite helpful. After our engineers looked over them we have been informed that the Mobil 1 M1-108 and the K-N #HP1008 are both qualified filters for the 2008 Smart Car with a 1.0Lt Mitsubishi Engine. Again thank you for your help." Both K&N and Mobil 1 should be updating their websites to reflect this new information shortly ;)

Hope that helps

From Mobil 1

Email received from Mobil 1 technical a couple of weeks ago:

"My morning's email to Mobil was replied-to by giving me a phone number to call.

The technician told me that they have examined the OEM Mitsu filter (1230A040) and have determined that the Mobil 1 M1-108 filter meets or exceeds all of the Mitsu's characteristics, including the spring rate of the by-pass valve. Until Mobil gets access to a smart and examines the physical layout surrounding the filter they can't complete adding it to their application list. The reason is that the Mobil 1 is slightly longer than the Mitsu by some fraction of an inch. Mobil's recommendation is to use M1-108 if the user is confident that there will be no ground clearance issues."

I'm not sure what you mean by this. is the 75W-90 a motorcycle oil? I know that the AMSoil 0W-40 is listed as a motorcycle oil and I am a bit leery about using it, that's why I plan to use Mobil 1 when I do the oil change tomorrow.

Does anyone know what specific oil goes in the tranny?

Trans oil is ATF?

According to the Evilution website, the oil in the smart transmission is NOT gear oil, but ATF. Shocked the heck out of me.
