Oil Analysis

Anyone thinking about having oil tested at someplace likehttp://blackstone-labs.com have been toying with the idea for a while now don't intend to go past recommended change intervals just hope to get a better picture of engine/oil condition. Thanks

Karl I was motor sergeant for years and Army went to Oil analysis decades ago to save oil changes ...I can attest that this is the optimum system but a tad expansive for our relatively low oil change costs...

What they do offer is real good but mostly for folks with large diesel motors that need to get max life out of 19+ quarts of oil...

I hope one or more members here do the oil analysis a few times and post the results... this will be good for most of the rest of us to see (generally) how the motor is wearing, and how much outside crap gets in.

I used that particular service for my Power stroke diesel. The service is excellent and the report is well enough analyzed that Joe average can read and use the info.

Hi Fred I know guys today that change oil every time they go out on the track. compaired to the price of a race motor ... what I am looking for is information about the health of the internals what is that shiny non magnetic stuff in the bottom of the pan. My guess is cylinder wall, why guess for around 30 bucks a year will tell you. That is less than the supplies for one change. pizza/beer vs information humm
it is much cheaper to jump to conclusions, ha ha the best data comes from a larger group...

Took lil Booger in for the 10k svc and asked the dealer to take a sample for me to send off to the lab. I was pleased to see the parts pricing is more in line with what the other dealers are charging but the checklist service came to just under $300. Way more than I think It was worth even at $95 hr shop rate.
the "FREE" wash was a pleasant surprise and a first. The cabin air filter was dirty but not anything out of the ordinary for an HVAC air filter. will post results when they come in.

oil analysis is one way to see the wear of an engine, it will tell you what kind of metal is in the oil, next, you need to know what the components of your engine are made out off to determine what's wearing...in our business Spectrometric Oil Analysis Programs or SOAP includes the oil filter as well, and is the oil filter weight that determines if an engine requires immediate tear down ....the new oil filter weight, saturated with fresh oil is compared to the used filter, and that value is what we use to see if our engines are going south...
Do I recommend oil analysis?....hell yeah...I know it works..

Had an oil analysis done with my last oil change by Blackstone Laboratories and tried to post it in here but the file is too long. Short story, everything is going good...using Mobile I 5W30.
