Oil Drain Plug Screen

what's the purpose of the screen attached to the end of the oil drain plug,, it's about 3/4 in in dia. and 2 1/4 in long, it was as clean as could be, never seen this before, but this is the first time i changed oil in a mercedes product

How many miles did you put on before changing?

Sounds like it might fit over the end of the suction tube (to keep crud out of the oil pump)??

There is a picture some where that shows a cutaway view of the Mitsubishi motor and it's clear that the oil pan is also the oil pick up tube for the oil pump, the screen is visible too in line with the oil drain plug.
Like Procrustes said, keeps the big stuf off the pump.

It sure looks like the oil is "pulled" into the engine through the screen, but with no oil pump being shown I could be wrong.

changed the oil at 1008 miles, if i had it to do over again i think i would of done it at 500 miles,,, a little more shiney stuff in the bottom of the drain pan than i expected

yep that's it, you can see it in the cutaway, but we don't have the ribbed belts, do we ?

Thank you for that! I was hoping something that also showed the cylinders and valves better too. But that's good stuff.

what did you retorque the drain-plug to? I'm changing the oil as we speak (and making a video to post).
