I just checked it again. it is not overfilled. It is right on the line. Most cars can go over or under the like at least 1/2 qt. There is no magic line in the oil pan that will kill your car if it is not right on the line. if it is overfilled by alot you can bend the lifters though.

If it's overfilled by a lot, the crankshaft will turn in the oil, aerating it, and main/rod/and cam bearings will depart, just a matter of what goes first.

I agree overfilling is bad.... I do not think a half qt. will do any damage one way or the other.

In this respect, your smart is not "like most cars."

Your oil should be below the "MAX" line, when taken at hot. If it is right on the line, that's too much.

Us old-timers have a little learnin' to do on this new car.

No one specific reason, just that there are a number of very good oils out there to choose from, plus there may be times when a particular oil is on sale when oil change time rolls around.

OK I took all the great advice here and drained out 1/2 qt tonight. better yo be safe than sorry. Thanks for all the great input. I love this site.
