Yes, but the car has first to be unlocked for the tailgate handle to be activated.
> Press button "unlock" on the key twice.
> Press and hold button "tailgate" on the key for approximately two seconds.
or
> Pull the release handle "1" in handle recess of the lower tailgate.
The upper tailgate is unlocked.
> Swivel the upper tailgate upwards to open.
Here it is:

1. If you hold down the tailgate release button on the key continously say for about 10 seconds the latch automatically released and the glass hatch opens a hair ready to be pulled open.
2. If you hit the unlock button twice on key you can then press in that buttom that is right above license plate to release glass hatch. The glass hatch can then be opened.

Number 2 gets yet to what shape you would be in if you did number 1.

Press the unlock button on the button bank on the dash, then use the manual release under the window normally.

Thank you .... They should still have a manual key lock in the rear... You still have to depend on electronics to lock and unlock. Still need a way to override the whole system.

I agree. My rear window will not open. Perhaps if I had a wiring diagram I could troubleshoot the system, but if the solenoid has failed then how do you get it unlatched?
When I push the remote I can hear a relay click under the dash.

One thing to watch out for: if the car is locked and you open the rear hatch with the key (doors button) and close it; the car will re-lock unless you open a door within one minute. Also if the car is sitting unlocked and you open and close the rear hatch, the car will lock . . .
Keep your key in your hand - or you could be locked out~!

I'm not sure this is correct, I believe that popping the hatch is seen as opening a door to the system, so it will not re-lock the doors after 1 minute. I can test this out this evening to verify though.

Pg. 89 of the Technical Guide gives instructions for emergency unlocking the rear hatch:

Quote:
Emergency unlocking of rear-end door
The rear-end door in the smart fortwo can be unlocked from the inside in an emergency, if the trunk lid central
locking motor for operating the rotary tumbler is defective or de-energized.
Emergency unlocking in smart fortwo coupé
To do this, a small tab at the side of the trunk lid lock
paneling must be carefully bent over or broken off to
produce a small hole.
A shop-made wire must then be inserted through the
small hole so that enough downward pressure is
exerted on the relay lever in the door lock to unlock
the rear-end door at the top.
A description of the procedure for manufacturing the
emergency release wire in the workshop is given in
the Workshop Information System (WIS).
Emergency unlocking in smart fortwo cabrio
In order to open the two door locks in the cabrio, a
hole must be accurately marked on the inside of the
rear-end door on each side. Then a hole of 0.2 in (5
mm) diameter is drilled through the paneling on each
side of the rear-end door..
A suitable screwdriver is inserted into each hole and
the rear-end door is unlocked by moving the screw
driver handles simultaneously in the directions of the
arrows.
The exact dimensions for the holes and a detailed
description of the procedure can be found in the
Workshop Information System (WIS).
