Hmmmm sounds awfully time consuming for a "emergency".

Thanks jwight,
With that information we were able to get the window unlocked and replace a defective actuator under warranty.

*** The following is offered as a Hopefully-Helpful Hatch Homily ***

Whenever we open our Smart's hatch glass, I think that very loud "SNAP!!!" makes it obvious that an unusually strong electro-mechanical event is taking place in the bowels of our respective tailgates. Also, I'm thinking we will NOT enjoy buying replacement opener mechanisms once our warranties have passed on to that Great Fleeting Promise Land In The Sky. Having a close relationship with The Patron Saint Of Silly Little Cars, I chose to mitigate this mechanical horror.

Before pressing the membrane opener-switch, I take my free palm and press inward on the bottom center of the glass--hold it--THEN press the membrane. When I do it this way, I'm rewarded with a smooth, unburdened, near-silent electric motor "swish." Being multi-lingual (I speak with forked-tongue), I can tell you that near-silent "swish" is the electric motor's way of saying, "Bless you sir, and the big wooden boat that brought you to me. Can I get you a cup of coffee? ...or some peanuts? How 'bout an RC Cola?"

Some folks won't give a feather-or-a-fig about this, but remember: Every time you use the hatch opener apparatus, that's ONE LESS TIME it's going to work. Like Paul Simon said: "Everything Put Together, Sooner-Or-Later Falls Apart." (and that's just the title! NOT the verse.)

Also, I consider slamming the glass shut to be rather low-rent on my part, like beating a two-year old for wetting his pants. So instead, I lower the back glass gently onto its rubber seal, then use that same free palm (again, at the bottom center of the glass) to lightly press the hatch closed.

No Loud "SNAP!!!" = No Undue Wear.

Just taking care of what's under our stewardship during our short visit to this planet is probably a worthy undertaking. We don't HAVE to care, but we have the option. And this option is what separates us from Chia Pets. At least some of us... I think.

Tell you what; I'll get back to you on that "Chia Pet" thing. In the meantime...

Bestooyoo,
ADiF

Am I the only one who read that as "no underwear" the first time around reading it.

Emergency unlocking of rear-end door
The rear-end door in the smart fortwo can be unlocked from the inside in an emergency, if the trunk lid central
locking motor for operating the rotary tumbler is defective or de-energized.
Emergency unlocking in smart fortwo coupé
To do this, a small tab at the side of the trunk lid lock
paneling must be carefully bent over or broken off to
produce a small hole.
A shop-made wire must then be inserted through the
small hole so that enough downward pressure is
exerted on the relay lever in the door lock to unlock
the rear-end door at the top.
A description of the procedure for manufacturing the
emergency release wire in the workshop is given in
the Workshop Information System (WIS).

Emergency unlocking in smart fortwo cabrio
In order to open the two door locks in the cabrio, a
hole must be accurately marked on the inside of the
rear-end door on each side. Then a hole of 0.2 in (5
mm) diameter is drilled through the paneling on each
side of the rear-end door..
A suitable screwdriver is inserted into each hole and
the rear-end door is unlocked by moving the screw
driver handles simultaneously in the directions of the
arrows.
The exact dimensions for the holes and a detailed
description of the procedure can be found in the
Workshop Information System (WIS).

Does anyone with WIS can post the exact location/dimensions of the holes to be drilled/tabs bent and shape/length of the release wire.

Thanks.

Thanks.
What fendish project are you working on now. A pull to inflate on front bumper that opens your rear hatch.
