I was warned by the dealer when I bought my smart, not to only use Park when on an incline. In fact he advised me to put the parking brake on then put the car in park to make sure I didn't put excessive force on the parking rod in the transmission. He told me the parking rod in these transmissions is very small. It's a bad habit Americans have gotten used to with conventional automatic transmissions. It's not really good on them either. Let the brakes do the work, that's what their designed for. Unfortunately most people don't use the parking brake as often as they should, so over time they corrode and freeze up and become useless anyway.
