Out of fuel question, please...

Quick question please, a local fellow smart car owner ran out of fuel the other day and afterwards noticed that his "Check Engine" light was on...is this the norm and will it reset with time or does it need to be cleared thru the OSB port? Thanks all for any help!

As to that, though I don't see anything specific (other than a warning not to) about running out of gas, since the engine will mis-fire in an out-of-gas situation, it would be natural to assume that the Check Engine light would come on, and after running for a while (or multiple successful starts), the light would go away again. If it doesn't, definitely get to the dealership (unless you have an ODBII reader that can clear codes)

...the low fuel press and the miss firing as stated will trigger the CEL...if more than 3 starts does not clear the CEL I will try a battery disconnect for 5 mins and see if that does the trick...

I tried that old excuse once but it didn't end well. After she pushed the car for two miles to the gas station, she was not in a good mood. Maybe I didn't need to sit in the car to steer but she certainly couldn't drive - the car was a manual and she didn't know how to drive a stick.

On a separate note, I need to ask that local barista out for coffee.

Go to parts store and have the code read and reset.

If the engine wasn't running, she wouldn't need to know how to drive a stick.

You really need to come up with better stories, John....

Again thanks everyone...will go over to the gentlemans' house and we'll drive to Advance Auto to check out the code number and then "clear" it. And truthfully, this is a friend's car...he has just gotten back from Jacksonville, Florida after having the 2.0 service done.
