Secondary Air Injection System is an emissions thing. To warm up the cat faster it puts through extra fuel and directs some fresh air into the exhaust. This only happens for the first 30 or so seconds after starting up and has no effect on anything after that.(unless the computer intentionally reduces your power to encourage you to take it in, not sure if MB does this or not).
About 3000 miles and the check engine light just came on. Took it to smart center San Francisco and they said most all the cars were returning with the engine light and it was a P0410 error. There was no effect on the performance, but it's easy for me to drop off the car.
They changed the car's Secondary Air Injection Solenoid and I picked up the car a few hours later. Here's hoping the replacement is from a more reliable batch of parts.
My smart center service tech told me that the valve is the biggest problem they were having, bigger than the transmission shifter. He said of the 90 smarts that he has PDI'd since scVAB opened, 10 have been back to have the valve replaced - a 1-in-9 failure rate. They now stock a bunch of spares.
