The tech said it is located right "on top" of the engine. Sump'n else we need: the manufacturers and mfg. part numbers of the original and the replacement valves.

Why would you do it yourself, when its free under warranty?

Because the dealer is 50 miles of congested interstate traffic away. A round trip will burn about $12 worth of gas, plus I would have to set aside a half day at the dealer's convenience, not necessarily mine, if I want a "wait-for." The net of $25 might not make that worth it to me.

Who knows, if I have the problem and presented the documentation and returned the bum valve, I might be able to talk them into rebating the $37.

I wish, but alas,
no.

My M-B parts guy will attach a picture of what I ask for just as a courtesy back-up since I'm a parts guy too.

According to legend,
The catalog is online at smart and accessed via password.
That way all parts and numbers are updated for everyone right away and not at the next CD update (like at my work).
Downside is logging-in and latent delays for access.

Only he (as manager of the dept.) has access,
either he doesn't want anyone else,
or more likely,
no one else at his store - wants - to be bothered by smart parts.

Hope I don't/didn't get him in trouble.

while talking to the district rep about my roof issue i talked to him about this issue. he assured me that this is not failing on all the cars, just a batch.

just wanted to share.

Long drive to smart center

My folks down there are super and took me in ahead of a few dropped off cars... in and out in under an hour... simple 5 min fix...took longer to clear the code and do the paper work then replace the part

My dealer has replaced a boat load of them... they see no correlation to Build date...so I assume the "batch" problem, if there is one, has been mostly USA spec cars... I say this because there is NOT ONE report, on the three Brit web sites I follow, about this part

MY dealer also claims not ONE return yet on any they replaced

part number above and price is correct... my dealer tells me that visually and by number there does not appear any way to tell the difference or batches on this part

another interesting factoid is none failed in first 500~750 miles but he did not remember lowest mileage failure and I relieved him of the pain of looking it up...he thought it was in the 900+ mileage range

another weird fact is this dealer has not done very many shifter repairs I think he said only three and they were all early builds

Oh, and by the way... the foot brake switch that seems to be the next problem failure is hidden down inside the foot brake pedal assy and the "Book" requires that any time the rubber weather boot is removed it MUST be replaced...additionally the adjustment for the switch is a real pain from what they say....

while I am on a roll about strange issues and maintenance...

There are two "Fan belts" one drives the alternator and water pump and has a traditional "tensioner"...fairly straight forward replacement method..

Unfortunately the other belt is a MB smart specialty item only... and I doubt the after market will ever carry it... It is called a "Stretch Belt" and it only drives the A/C compressor...removal and installation is by special tool and bumping the motor over, a two man operation

Just thought all the motor heads here would be interested is some of the issues I am discovering..... at about the same pace as my smart center master technician...
