The one thing you have to keep in mind is that it is a Mercedes-Benz product. It's going to be a bit more pricey if you have to have the dealer work on it... and the nearest dealer to you would probably be a tossup between Columbus or Indianapolis (unless Boose Chevrolet decides to turn into a smart dealer, which I don't think is going to happen anytime soon

)
That being said, it's not a hard little car to work on yourself. The worst thing is that it needs the valves adjusted at 60K miles - the spark plugs are easy to get to, the oil filter and drain are easy to get to, and the air filter isn't hard.
Welcome to the board, by the way... and good luck with the wait. You'll have a pretty unique car - I grew up in Huber Heights and have a good amount of family in Brookville/Lewisburg - when I have been back home, I have not seen any smarts around there.
