Photos of OEM oil filter cut open

For those who are as interested in oil and filters as I am, here are some photos I managed to locate of an OEM Tokyo Roki oil filter cut open.

This particular filter is a Yamaha 5DM-13440-00, which sources indicate is identical to the factory-equipped Mitsubishi 1230A040 (smart A1321800110).

Enjoy.

...somewhere here in the asylum photo library are some pics of the factory filter cut open just like that one...I think it was when we were talking about the filter magnets or such....I cut it open (have tool) and sure enough the larger pieces were stuck to the housing walls and the fine/grit was stuck to the bottom magnet...proving that they do work...

jetfuel...stuck on smart...

Thanks for sharing - less media than I expected see in that stubby.

Somewhere there's an unhappy Mama because her can opener is covered in motor oil. And when Mama's not happy . . .

I also located photos of some of the most common aftermarket filters for the 451.

Incidentally, these filters are also specified for various Subaru applications.

Bosch D3300 "DistancePlus"

Fram XG6607 "Xtended Guard" (superseded by "Ultra")

K&N HP-1008

I don't know which is the most popular with members but as an owner of a new smart I am initially going with the Purolator Syn oil filter. Changed oil at 2,500 miles and will soon change again at 5k with the new filter.

I've always used the Mobil M-108. mostly because of price and availability in my area. Last change I used the WIX filter that's basically got the exact same specs as the stock, simply because my shops were out of the Mobil filters.

My conclusion is any of them would be perfectly ok on the little 1 litre monster.
