Not to worry . . .

Being new, the car won't get the best mileage right out of the box. . . it takes a while to settle in the new engine, transmission, driver, etc.
My first tank full was appallingly low, too. Maybe not 22mpg but around 26. But then I considered that most of the driving I was doing was all town - mostly 35 - 45 mph. It has gotten better over the months.
Relax, don't drive it like a dragster, and it will improve for you.

I must have recieved a good one

did not check first tank as was not sure dealer filled full.

every other tank has been around 41 with 1 tank reading 38. best is 43.
Used the air conditioning the first few tanks and not since, not much difference noted.

My gas mileage went way down

I got my Cabrio in May '08. All was going well, getting between 35-40 mpg. I always set my Tripometer after a fill-up so I notice right away when my mpg started to drop. After 3-4 fill-ups I took it to the dealer. According to their tests "it meets dealership specifications". But now I'm getting approx. 25 mpg. This is horrible, I was getting 32 in my Sebring.
I'm heading back to the dealership soon!!

mine got better after 2,000 miles and has jumped again at just under 7,000 mikes. Just keep driving.

I did purchase a Scangauge and it does help you learn where the best milage is. I also like the MPH readout as it is more accurate, and the temp. readout for the coolant. But that's just me.

Do you always get your gas at the same station. Try a dif. gas station.

This is good sense - when I got my Smart I did just this and noticed that I was getting about 320 out of each tank - but there was still a gallon in the tank each time. I never let the gas level drop below the last bar on the tank indicator. So I figure I was getting total about 350 each tank.

If you'e only taking short trips, it could impact mileage. The smart is happiest when warm.

Mine isn't doing too horribly for the first tank. 35 mpg. And that isn't even broken in yet. I hope it gets better.
22? Ouch. that's what my Impala gets on mixed driving.

You do mean 22 mpg? Since that's considerably less than the EPA numbers, I'd see the dealer. If not satisfied, call SmartUSA.
