Poor Handling at 65mph plus

My smart moves around my lane a bit when I hit 60mph plus. First I thought it was a windy day plus car and truck turbulence. Is just the nature of the car design or is it something bigger?

Have you checked tire pressure to make sure it's correct?

Tire pressure ok

I took it to the dealership to check it over. They adjusted the tire pressure and it still moves around a bit.

Get used to it. Its the nature of the beast. As much as I like the little car, its certainly not something I'd like to take a long road trip in.

Mine does the same. I just take it as its part of having such a short wheelbase. I don't believe it's not safe, just gotta stay alert. No steering a Smart with your knees as you eat a double cheeseburger and talk on the cell phone!

Having just done an Interstate trip yesterday I think it is the nature of the beast (is there an echo in here?). These cars are sensitive to the wind and to turbulence from trucks, and they need to be driven every minute; they are not cars where the driver can have his left elbow on the window sill, left hand on the wheel and a cup of coffee in his right hand. They are no worse, IMHO, than other cars their size and weight, but if a person doesn't come from a small car background they will require some changes in driving habits.

Its probably grooved pavement or ruts in the road. Mine moves on the grooved pavement but never wanders out of its lane and I've had the experience riding wider ruts than the smart. Its perfectly fine on the highway with good, flat pavement. Takes some getting used and you can't do ten other things while driving...

What jwight said...

Try driving on winding country roads at 65 mph! I did, and it sticks to the road!

We have a "real" car in the family, for road trips. Our wee car stays on city streets where it belongs...
