Car is sitting in driveway, I don't have a key on me, and I discover that the doors aren't locked. I press the lock button on the dash and nothing happens, so I guess I have to have a key on me to lock the doors, correct?
So the only way to lock the car is by using the remote or by manually inserting the key into the driver's door lock?
No. You can lock by pressing the "lock" button on the dash. But the doors will lock only after about 1 minute...
Let me find the exact wording of the Owner's Manual...
Quote:
Locking the vehicle
If you can no longer lock the vehicle using the
remote control and you do not have a spare
transmitter battery at hand, please proceed
as follows:
>Open the driver's door.
>Press the central locking switch
The indicator lamp on central locking
switch 1 comes on, when the starter switch
is in position 1.
The indicator lamp on central locking
switch 1 flashes, when the starter switch is
in Position 0.
>Remove the key from the starter switch,
take it with you, and close all doors.
The vehicle is now locked and the anti-theft
warning system is armed.

Good question. I don't think I've ever tried it. I'll have to check it out this weekend...

The Key lock on the drivers door is only for unlocking the car with a dead remote. It is a cable system. Cables can pull but they can't push. (this is what my smart service tech told me.)
Another idea: close the car except the hatch. Before closing the latter, hit the button with a pole... ? (I vaguely remember that being mentioned way back.)

Sounds like some smart engineer locked their keys in a car one too many times and decided that they'd make it so you'd have to try really hard to do it in a fortwo...
Unlock the doors, walk away, when you come back your locked out.
Like someone mentioned before in the "where do you keep your key when surfing" thread. Lock the doors with fob, push the hatch button on the fob, open hatch, put fob in back while keeping your modified Key, close hatch.
Yep, just about sailor-proof. . .
I remember the padlocks the US Navy had. . . needed a key to open them, couldn't remove the key from the slot until they were locked again - no way to lock the key inside anything. . . i.e. sailor-proof~!
