If you check the thread started by fredvon4, he took pictures of the plug he pulled from his car, it is not a 4 point electrode. I know there has been some discusion that the PN Denso has on our plugs does not decode properly.

Denso don't make Iridium plugs for the smart yet but they will eventually.
I am trying to pin them down on the 4 point electrode thing, it could be a lost in translation problem between their language and ours.

XU22HDR9
XU=12mm thread, 16mm hexagon
22 = heatrange (NGK 7)
H = 26.5mm thread
D = extended spark position + strengthened ground electrode
9 = 0.9mm (0.035") gap

Multi electrode spark plugs only have one spark at a time. The look interesting, but do not offer increased performance over single electrode spark plugs.

Why do manufacurers use multi electrode spark plugs?
1- As a cheap way to make a spark plug last longer (without the need for precious metals)
2- Because they need short ground electrodes (increased resistance to heat / vibrations)
3- To use a semi-surface discharge effect. (not all multi electrode types have this)
(If the insulator nose of a spark plug has fouling, there will be a conductive layer of carbon. The spark will try to escape to ground over this. If there is an electrode close, the smark will partially travel over the conductive layer and for the rest over in the air to the ground electrode.
On it's wat it will burn of carbon and 'clean' the plug.

Disavantages of multi-electrode spark plugs:
The electrodes obstruct the beginning flamefront and absorb the energy from it.
They require a higher Voltage to make a spark.

Best spark plug would be two needles opposed to eachother, there is a new generation of (expensive) plugs coming up that have this.
Actually, the Nissan Skyline Nissan 350Z + Infinity G35 with VQ35HR engine use Denso FXE22HR11 (Nissan P/N 22401EW61C) sparkplugs.
These are needle-to-needle SIP (Super Ignition Plug) types. Similar to the Smart pugs

Iridium upgrade for std plug = SXU22HDR8 = Mitsubishi P/N : 1822A010 as used in i-car turbo (chassiscode HA1W) and Outlander V-6 (chassiscode CW6W)

For heavy tuning or race use, there is a colder heatrange spark plug for the standard (std=XU22HDR9/1822A009) in the Smart/Mitsubishi 3A21 engine.
This is the same plug as used in the Lancer Evolution X (Chassiscode CZ4A)
Racing spark plug = NGK ILKR8E6 (Mitsubishi P/N = 1822A021)
Racing spark plug = DENSO GX8-1 (Denso P/N 2677004900) (for industrial (bio)gas-engines)

(Because you are in the US, there needs to be a disclaimer :-) , here it is: I am not writing this as company, it is just out of my personal interest to help you find 'difficult' spark plugs. All information above is reference only, any modification of engines and sparkplugs is at your own risk.)

Some people want more than the factory plugs. They were after all chosen as a compromise for cost vs. performance.
