I don't know if you can drive around with it off, but I definitely recommend getting it painted.

In my opinion you can drive around with all the body panels off... they are just cosmetic, no structure as far as I understand.

You'll be fine with just the grill off.

It will get BUGS in its teeth and even in other parts that the panels cover up.... Private parts... that are difficult get BUGS out of....
Oh heck just do it and let the smart feel the breeze in all THOSE parts!

The tail lights hook into the back panels... you need those! So I guess the smart gets to at least run around in its underwear!

Shouldn't be an issue taking the smile off to get it painted.

It'll do fine. I drove with all my panels off for about 10 miles (no traffic as I live VERY rural so brake lights weren't needed and I also had the headlights pulled). FWIW - if you drive with panels off make sure your side marker lights are taped up out of the way. They will bounce on the tires if left down.

Your center grille fits into the grille surround so you'll be missing both pieces. You should be OK as long as no rocks or anything fly into that open mouth.

If you are concerned with rocks and stuff getting in there, just get some wire mesh and tape it to the back side. It will hold for a couple days.... poor mans mesh grill.
