question - locking the car without the key?

My question is this - Is it possible to lock a smart car without the key fob?

I recently went on vacation and left the smart in the driveway unlocked. I called my son and asked him to run by the house and lock the car up. I found that both sets of keys went on vacation with me. He could not find a way to lock the doors, then close the doors and have them stay locked.

fyi - it is a smart cabrio with no alarm - I considered having him reach in from the back and press the lock key on the dash but he had already given up and left by that time.

So, did he miss something obvious? I haven't tried it myself but it would seem that there must be a way to lock the car without the key.

I just tried mine, and couldn't do it. When the door is open and/or the key is not in the ignition all that would do anything was the unlock button would unlock if they were locked, but not the other way around.

Yeah that's been a constant pain in the butt for me, because I have a habit of taking my keys out of the ignition and putting them away, then getting out of the car... THEN I have to take the keys back out to lock the car! I have been driving a Civic the last 5 years or so, and I locked it from the driver's door before I got out!

You just need to be 'retrained'. It's just so you inadvertently lock your keys in the car. I would MUCH rather be 'inconvenienced' in this way than to lock my keys in the car and have to call my smart center to order another key at a HUGE expense OR call a family member, inconveniencing THEM and have them go by my house, pick up the extra key (if they can get into your house) and then bring you the key.

Sorry if this upsets all of you, but that sounds kind of selfish. Just push the lock button on your key BEFORE you put it away. No biggie...just 'retraining'.

Hmm i didnt kno that. how far can you be from car to press lock button on the key. is the range pretty big or no? I always press it right by the car so i didnt know.

I think the only way you can lock your keys in your car is intentionally. Lock the car and press the hatch release button on your key. Once open, toss your keys IN your car and shut the hatch.

Other than that, I think it's IMPOSSIBLE to inadvertently lock them in.

I think BP is correct, I'm pretty sure even the scenario of locking from the button through the opened hatch won't work. Granted, I've not tried it, but I know that if my hatch is cracked, I can't lock the doors from the keyfob, so I can't imagine the dash button being different.

Why not get a pet Troll where he can lock and unlock your doors on command.

With the key in the ignition, turn to the "on" position and press the lock button on the dash. Remove the key, get out and shut the door. It's locked! (Hope you took the key with you).

But no, I don't think you can lock the car without either the fob or this method.

if so, you might think again. I hear "Mrs Fuel" got one of those and there's no 'commanding' him to do anything and in fact, he's mostly OUT OF CONTROL! .......

Either your way or mine, you still need the key. I think they were wanting to just walk up, without a key, and lock the car. IMPOSSIBLE?
