I have seen some older threads and am still confused - I am hoping I can get the most current information.
When a windshield is replaced in a Smart fortwo with the rain sensor does the sensor need to be replaced or can it be re-used with just a "gel-pack"?
If the old sensor can be reinstalle, any specifics on proper removal of the old rain sensor and specifics on the gel-pack would be appreciated.
I am having my windshield replaced by a Safelight affiliated auto-glass shop, but this is the first Smart with a rain sensor that they have done and the information that they are getting is confusing as well.
I had my windshield replaced at Seattle Smart and they use a local glass guy who just re-uses the original sensor. Actually seemed to work better after the repair. You might consider calling Seattle Smart for additional information.
smart WIS document says you have to replace the sensor. I am guessing that this is due to the gel pack. The repair shop I recommend here in Seattle has a generic gel pack that they use to get around this.
I would guess they have replaced several dozen windshields. Have never replaced a sensor.
When Safelight replaced mine about a year ago, the tech told me that the gel packs are not reusable, and that Smart does not offer the gel pack alone as some other automakers, including MB. Hence the requirement for a new sensor.
