Radio comes on by itself

Has anyone had the same experience ? I switch off the radio before cutting of the ignition, then, when starting the engine again, the radio comes on. It seems to switch itself on while the car is "asleep". Can be startling.

There is another thread on this. It's by design...one of the little 'different' things about a Smart car! If you want to turn it off, before you cut the ignition I hit the 'src' button and put it 'AUX' then when the car starts you don't get instant on radio. Not a issue here!

I don't think it's by design. The radio 9 that originally came with my car would stay off when turned off. The radio 10 that is now installed does the same. Either the half the people that report the radios doing as mine does. (Off means off) or the other half who's radios reset when the ignition is turned off to the on position, has an abnormal condition.

Judging from the number of computers on board, and the inability to add foglights after the fact, I'm _guessing_ that theres a batch of ECU's out there that are programmed 1 way.

Yep. Our radio has a mind of its own too. Comes on when the car is started, even if it was off before the ignition was cut. Thanks for the tip to set it to AUX.

I also have an auto-on radio. will try the aux trick next time.

oh! so that's what's going on! i thought i was going crazy!

i have the 6-cd changer/radio deal in the smartmobile...i pretty much only listen to cds. i guess i was turning off the player when i parked...and the next morning, when starting the car, the radio would come on...

but i never really listen to the radio...

now i get it, it seems that it is a default auto-on radio. interesting.

when i leave the cd player on when parking, the player picks up right where i left off when the car restarts...as one might expect...
