Nope, mine is definitely inside the door behind the plastic panel. Its probably the window rattling against the frame or something else inside there. Anyone know how to take the inside panels off??

Mine does this....

Hello

Any word on a fix...

My drivers door does this - it is definately something behind the plastic and since it is on the drivers side I can clearly hear is right up against my left ear... annoying

I tried holding the plastic; even the bar that runs up between the windows bit the rattle persists

Holding the door handle and pulling inside doesn't stop it either

It started this about a week ago - I never noticed it before that

Any words of wisdom

Cheers

I have this sound and it grew until it became a full squeak. We found that it was the door latch and it had been loosening each time I drove on my gravel road (even slowly).
I needed a 30 mm star bit/screwdriver to tighten the 3 screws after moving the latch outward a teeny bit.

I wonder if this might be the same problem that I had. My rattle sounded like it was around the passenger door area, and only occurred above a certain speed on the freeway.

In my case it turned out to be one of the fasteners for the cover on the *underside* of the car, even though the sound seemed to be coming from the door area. There are I think 4 of these fasteners, each with a bolt which screws into a plastic clip. The clip is hidden by the cover, but the bolt head is exposed and you can easily test with your fingers if one is loose.

The clip being made of plastic means the bolt can easily strip it, which is what seems to have happened to mine. My dealer gave me a new clip, I fitted it easily myself (and I'm no expert!), and the problem went away.

You can read more about my experience on the SoCal Smarties message board. Sorry I'm unable to post a link, it seems that being such a n00b I'm not allowed links in my forum posts yet. But I'm sure you know how to find the site, and then click 'messages' and look at the one entitled "mystery rattling sound".

And if you look at my photos there, you can see what the clip looks like. Just click 'members' and look for me, Mike Day. There's a tab for viewing my photos. (When I've clocked up some more postings here I'll add the proper links to the present thread.)

I hope your rattle turns out to be the same problem, because it's very easy to cure.

Good luck!
Mike

Took care of the rattle from the right door area. Turns out it was not the door. It was the undercarriage cover, that plastic cover under the car. On the passenger side the bolt was hanging off so it was not connected. Looks like they didn't put it on right at the factory. Anyway putting that bolt back in place secured the cover. No more rattle in the wind.
My mechanic bud says he is surprised the cover didn't fly off and get run over by now.

It also happens to my car but not a Smart. Maybe this can help your problem.
This screw was so loose that the washer was rattling on it:

I also tightened these up a bit in the glove box:

Rear passenger door rattled so I applied some foamy padding all around, following the TSB (http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Vol....html) as a guide, applied painters tape before removal, and then applied the foamy door seal material according to the painters tape, came out clean looking.

Now if I could only solve the rear seat in the locked position rattle

It is the gas flap, rattling in the wind. Lock the doors, which also locks the gas flap closed and wiggle it in and out with your finger. Rattle, Rattle, clackety clack, flap, flap, etc. I thought all along erroneously that it was the cabrio top needing adjustment.
I put a little foam rubber to bias the door out so it can't rattle, but not so much that the latch can't still latch closed when the doors lock.
It's the first time it has not rattled in the wind since I bought it.
I'm so proud. It has been the number one thing on my pet peeve repair list.
I hope this helps others solve theirs. Maybe there is a latch adjustment. Anybody know that? Kermit?

I had an annoying noise coming from the passenger seat. After the divorce, I never heard it again. Wait.....I take that back. It did start up again after I re-married.
