(Re: low battery) Blinking wrench, -1, won't start

I got in my smart a little while ago to go to the store and it decided it didn't want to start today.

It's not cranking, I turn the key and I get a couple clicks and then it goes to beeping and flashing the single wrench and a -1 where the mileage is.

It was fine yesterday, no trouble whatsoever. It is 22 degrees F outside but I've stared ok on colder days.

Any ideas?

With the clicking noise, sounds like a dead battery. Got jumpercables or get a new battery

Also possibly pull up passenger floor mat and check cable connections are tight

Don't have access to a jump start, but do have a charger. Hooked that up directly to the battery and it went right into the charge cycle.

I tested it with a multimeter and showed 11.7 volts off and 10.5 in position 1.

11.7 is a little low, does it crank now? Were the voltage readings taken with the charger connected or disconnected? If they were taken with the battery disconnected, replace the battery. With just the accessories on in pos 1, a 1.5 volt drop is significant. How long was the charge interval?

No THAT (the wrench) wouldn't do it, was just explaining what it was

I only just started charging after taking those readings. I'll be testing it again once it finishes charging.

The 11.7 was in position 0 (off).

Just finished the charge cycle and it started right up. Still can't get the service indicator to clear though. I know for sure it's early but I'll get it taken care of anyway.

Actually, that would be useful. Master chief, what's your source? Is that some newfangled ASE certified training or something? Because mine reports 11.3 volts in the mornings now whether it's 22 or 50 degrees. A month ago I could swear it reported 11.7, and I'm pretty sure it was 11.9-12.3 when it was new.

I'd better find a 34R battery soon huh?

I told myself I was going by Autozone for a load test tonight, but I got an early call home and my plans were derailed. I do have a trickle charger... I think I'll go hook that up for a bit tonight. It's gonna be under 30 tonight.
