Rear License

Hope this is the right sub-forum for this. Picked up Maxwell yesterday. The only provision for a rear plate is two dimples in the tail gate panel. Can't find any info in the owner's manual regarding drill size and what I might find behind the plastic. I hope it is not just a pilot hole and a self-tapping screw.

I think you are correct, drill a hole and run a screw in there...........crude ain't it? One would hope they could do better.

Have used double sided tape with great success on our older Mini; didn't want to drill the boot lid. Should work as well on the smart.

Is there a concern with the plastic rusting ?

No, just don't want to drill the bodywork unless absolutely necessary. The standard Mini rear plate mounting involves drilling the holes, putting plastic inserts in the holes and running the screws into the inserts. Anything will work, but I prefer the no damage approach if possible.

I feel the same way, what's wrong with molding a threaded insert into the panel and using a proper machine screw, not some cheesy self-tapper.

Don't even get me started on the FRONT plate mount "system".

So it sounds like we are saying that I am not alone in having a neddik boot panel save the two dimples. I'll have to sleep on it. My initial instinct is to epoxy some plastic inserts into the body panel so I'm not screwing directly into the smart plastic.

Most of us will take delivery with the license frames all ready mounted. Mine were done with self tapping screws directly into the plastic, front and rear. At least the front has the smart black license holder under the plate.
