Hi SeaDoc, It looks like you can use pretty much whatever you think works best. The dealers are not all doing it the same and neither are owners. Whatever you use, make sure it's stainless or brass just to avoid rust.

thanks Dave and just went to Wal-Mart and picked up a Bell Universal Mounting Kit, model 46127-8 which allows me to punch a hole in the 2 dimples already marked on the back lid and then use this kit to add my plates - I happened to color the kit gloss white to match the car, otherwise comes in black - fits perfectly under the license plate light. Make sure you use washers or shorter screws than what they supplied as they will be too long and will damage the 'secret compartment' in the trunk lid for the coupe.
