Maybe there is a reason they don't want the seat back to go past the tridium cell........

Remember that the passenger seat is mounted further back then the drivers seat. I would say that by limiting the amount that the seat will recline is a safety feature to keep the passenger out of the rear crumple zone.

There is no rear crumple zone on the smart. The tridion is designed to direct the impact forces down through the engine and under the car. I'm sure it would pop the seat back up sharply though!

Having a reclining seat is very handy if you're on a trip and need to get some shut eye and can't find a room to lay down in. I've done it more than once, prior to smart.

Indeed. Many current gen cars offer a full-recline feature (Honda Fit and CR-V models, for example). The front and rear seats can be converted into on-the-road beds by removing the front seat headrests and aligning the front seat back with the rear seat cushion. {**CAUTION** DO NOT RECLINE (or sleep) AND DRIVE }
The adjustment of the Smart seat provides a tad more comfort.

Maybe it's to keep the passenger near the dash airbag if it deploys. If they're having to travel an extra 10-12 inches it may change the timing of the airbag deployment and subsequent deflation, with possible head injury to the passenger. They might also have a tendency to go into the footwell knees first. . . not a happy thought.
