I've been driving over 20 years, and last year I finally had to change my first alternator, it was in my 1983 truck with 140K miles on it, I just wore out the brushes. Have others really had that much trouble with alternators to warrant this?

I wonder why you have construed that I wanting basic knowledge of my Smart Car is worried about anything. (just had to capitalize Smart Car now that I know I'm not suppose to). I personally believe anyone who operates this car beyond any distance from a dealer should be aware of several things. I personally want to know about my car not that if I should capitalize or not.

Those "special bolts" are called jacking bolts and I use them all the time in my occupation. I make mine from allthread and hex nuts, assorted sizes.

Are these bolts in use on our cars now? Or, are they needed only if you drop the power plant? If the bolts are in use now , why not just put the old bolts back in? I know, some bolts can't be reused due to specs.

The bolts are the same type as the ones already in your vehicle. They are just a foot longer.

If anyone gets adventuresome and decides to try and drop their engine please be aware that you do need to loosen up the cooant hoses and lines. If you do not you very well could cause a bit of damage to your car.

Should have to disconnect coolant lines, parking brake cables, hydraulic brake lines, shift linkage, fuel lines, and all electric connections.

This is an interesting thread... I hope someone out there actually TRIES IT soon and posts pictures....

The way I understand it.. the LONG BOLTS that the service center use.. just drop the engine a few inches... this gives the technician enough room to get to the top and front of the engine without completely removing it from the car..

The previoous post about removing the coolant hoses likely is true.. but there may be enough slack in things like the electrical wires to allow the engine to lower without a problem.
Also.. on some other board where I read about this.. it seemed to me the engine and transmission were lowered.. but not the whole drive train...
that would leave out things like break lines etc..

anyone knowledgeable about this???
Pictures???? :-)

What we really need is a complete maintenance manual, that would answer most of the questions.
I think I can figure out how to take any thing apart but what about all the torque specs, wiring diagrams, and trouble shooting procedures?
Somebody out there, sell us the MM.
