Roof on national backorder!!?? Umm, Babybenz - do you have any insight? I do need to break away from up here and drive down to do my replacement for my roof, mileage isn't getting any less on the car as I need to continue driving it.

Heh, if you've ever worked in development or tech support you'll know one cardinal rule: Sales gets whatever results they want.

Threaten the salesperson's commission and they'll snap to attention faster than you can say "blog."

I called smart of dallas three times in two days and still no return call to make an appointment. How many times does it take to get a return call??????? it is a panorama roof

Have replaced 4 panoramic roofs here for just that problem. Has to do with an issue in the finishing phases of the frame. The clear coat pools up on in the corners and is not 100% cured when they lay the roof in, the bonding just does not attach. Takes about 2 hours to repalce and then has to set for 18 hours to completly cure.

Having the exact same problem with my roof too. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Have already called and left a message at the dealership and am taking it in first thing Monday morning. Thanks for all the info.

Spoke with Service Manager this morning, he asked that I drop the car off, (they'll give me a loaner) and they will reglue the roof. Nothing was mentioned about replacement so I'm assuming they will reuse the roof I have...frm what I can tell there is nothing wrong with it, aside from it coming unglued.

Looks like un-gluing issues can happen in small batches (like the one we had in '08 involving a couple dozen cars). Here's a '09 recall in the UK:

"Vehicle Details
Reference : R/2008/135
Manufacturer Ref : S041
Make: MERCEDES BENZ
Model : SMART - FOUR TWO
Launch Date : 19/01/2009
Numbers Involved : 26
Build Start Date :
Build End Date :
Recall Details Concern : WINDSHIELD MAY BECOME LOOSE

Description : Adhesion faults may occur between the individual paint coatings at the bonding surface of the roof and the windshield. Under extreme conditions this could lead to peeling of the roof or the windshield, which may lead to the windshield/roof becoming loose.

Remedial Action : Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to renew the paint work and bonding of the roof and windshield.

Took my car in and they fixed the roof. Spoke with Mark at smart Bloomfield and he said they would just use the same roof and just re-epoxy it. So far so good. Also had them check a few minor issues, jiggley drivers side mirror and jangling noise (sounds like a metal cookie sheet with a bunch of loose nuts and bolts on it vibrating) under the car. my baby came back as good as new. I'm happy!

Yes just a glue issue. The roof should be fine.
