Rubberized engine compartment cover

I asked this question before, but I cant seem to find where I posted it......

The rubberized engine compartment cover that is above the metal engine cover is a real pain to keep up out of the way when trying to check the oil. Mine has a plastic S-loop piece attached to the right-hand corner that looks like it should fit in the cutout in the side panel but it wont reach. Any answers????

It fits. You need to pull it. Hence, rubber

I have the same issue so I use a paint stir stick to hold up the mat.

If you remove the hook and flip it over, it will fit in the receptacle a little easier. At least, that is my experience with it. Others suggested this to me.

First of all, I turned my hook around on the fabric tab so it engages the forward edge of the hole. Then...

If you look at the fabric carpet there are two threaded hold-downs on the forward, outer corners - the one on the left is a plastic disk and the one on the right is a steel "D"-ring to attach the child seat (both M8 thread). The plastic fastner comes out easily by fingertips; it will take a T40 Torx bit and some strength to initially remove the machine screw in the "D"-ring. Once those two fasteners are out there is a lot more available movement in the carpet, and it is actually a lot further out of the way. The fasteners can both be put back finger-tight. I have on order a second plastic fastener to replace the "D"-ring and screw (P/N A000 991 2795, 86¢).

I use a bungie cord hooked on to the little loop at the center of the carpet edge closest to the tailgate. I then loop the bungie around the seat's head rest. Pulling on the center loop seems to put less stress on the foam than using the hook on the right side. Just my $0.02.

Lift up the cover and hold it against the seats tight with your left hand. THen use your right hand to use the rubber catch on the the right.

These are the kinds of things your dealer should have gone over with you when you took delivery. And they should have had you do it rather than show you how to do it.

Go go out and Practice many times until it becomes second nature. For me, I don't see a lot of need to get in their.

Has anyone else noticed horizontal "cracks" forming in the foam on the back side of the carpet? Probably doesn't make much difference, but I would have thought it would be flexible enough not to crack, especially with only 6000 miles on the car.

Yes it is annoying. I simply removed the D-ring bolt so that the cover can go back further.

This works at a gas station or for other access requirements not requiring major work on the engine
